Tucker retires due to lack of contract offers

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Darcy TuckerDarcy Tucker won’t be playing in the NHL this year; or ever again. After a 15-year career with Montreal, Tampa Bay, Toronto and Colorado, Tucker has announced his retirement after a summer of shopping himself around that ultimately ended without him finding a city willing to pay the money he felt he deserved. In a league where many teams are looking for young talents or fighting salary cap issues, Tucker is an odd man out.

Tomas Kaberle back with the Toronto Maple Leafs after summer of nothing

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Rumors,

Tomas KaberleThe Maple Leafs’ defenseman Tomas Kaberle and coach Ron Wilson say they like each other. Every other indication is that they don’t. Kaberle arrived back in Toronto for training camp and was immediately questioned by the media about the situation. This has been a continuous story older than the Kovalchuk contract, but it’s almost at the point where we can see if actions truly speak louder than words when these two interact with each other when the season begins.

Tomas Kaberle continues to wear Toronto Maple Leafs blue and white

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Rumors,

Tomas KaberleThe summer’s ongoing story between Tomas Kaberle’s no-trade clause and the Toronto Maple Leafs who was in trade talks with other teams possibly came to an end last night. Kaberle’s contract allowed him to be traded up until 12:01 a.m. EST, but that deadline came and passed and Kaberle is still the property of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment. It looks like he’ll report to Toronto’s training camp and wear the blue and white for another season, unless he waives his no-trade clause at some point, but that likely won’t happen until the trade deadline.

White leads the league at least once

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Ian WhiteWhen Ian White retires, he’ll be able to look back on his NHL career and say that he once led the league in at least one category. With the regular season over, White has played more games than any other NHLer. Thanks largely to a midseason trade between his former Toronto Maple Leafs and the Calgary Flames, White played 83 games this year. Going the other way was Dion Phaneuf. Both defenseman are 25 years old, separated by less than two months, but that’s about all the parallels you’ll find.

Kaberle’s potential Maple Leaf swan song

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Rumors,

Tomas KaberleFour-time All-Star Tomas Kaberle may be playing his last game as a Toronto Maple Leaf in front of the hometown crowd tonight at the Air Canada Centre. The 32-year old Czech made his debut with the Leafs in 1998 after being drafted 204th overall in 1996, and has been one of the mainstays on the team since. His no-trade clause expires after the season, and many are expecting him to be shipped out in favor of draft picks before this year’s Entry Draft, as Toronto is in desperate need of getting some.

Penguins struggle to steal win from Leafs

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Crosby & MalkinIt took the defending Stanley Cup champions to bring the Leafs down. Toronto is playing way out of its league this month, having taken nine of their last 13 games, and they’ve been doing it competitively. Eight of their nine wins have come either in overtime or a shootout. The only other was a 6-4 win against last-place Edmonton. Sunday evening’s 5-4 shootout loss to Pittsburgh is the latest sign that while 2009-10 is a write-off for the lackluster Leafs, some minor offseason tweaks and improvements might bode well for Toronto, and poorly for the rest of the league.

Eastern Conference race is polarizing…mostly

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Dave SteckelAs the NHL season winds down, the Eastern Conference is shaping up and teams are starting to separate in the standings. It seems that the more north you look, the stronger the teams generally are, with the exception of the first and last-place teams. Four out of five Northeast teams hold a playoff spot, while four out of five Southeast teams don’t. As it stands right now, it’s going to be awfully hard for anybody to swap tickets to the postseason.

Stempniak shines as NHL second star

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Playoffs,

Lee StempniakIf you haven’t yet heard of Lee Stempniak, you’re not alone. Actually, unless you live in the St. Louis, Toronto, or now Phoenix areas, you probably haven’t heard about him yet, and won’t again for a long, long time. Nevertheless, Stempniak was honored by the NHL as the Second Star of the Week ending Mar. 14 for his strong performances against Vancouver, Carolina and Atlanta. The newest little Coyote has already made a huge impact with his new club.

The battle of the basement dwellers

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL,

Ales HemskyIt’s the proverbial ‘Clash of the whatever-the-opposite-of-a-Titan-is’ this Saturday night on Hockey Night in Canada. The Toronto Maple Leafs, who sit last in the Eastern Conference will welcome the Edmonton Oilers, who are last in the Western Conference, into the Air Canada Centre for an epic clash of mediocrity. These two teams lead the league in worst goal differential, goals allowed, and best golf score by points; none of which are categories they’d wish to lead though.

The worst teams have more than that in common

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Front Office, NHL,

Ron WilsonAre there any coaches liked less than Ron Wilson? His comments about Team Canada after their Olympic victory against his American squad have put him under the spotlight and fans are calling for his head. Now back as the head honcho of the last-place team in the Eastern Conference, Wilson is once again just the most recent of a string of Leaf coaches who are going through rough times. The three worst records in the NHL belong to the Hurricanes, Leafs, and Oilers. With a combined record of 63-100-24, all three have more than just that in common. The three coaches are the three most recent heads of the Maple Leafs.
